June 21 was declared the International Day of Yoga or World Yoga day last year in December by United Nations General Assembly. The declaration was done after the present Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi called the UN to propose this idea. It will be celebrated first time on this Sunday, June 21, 2015.
Yoga was originated in India around 6000 years ago. It was later introduced to the west by Indian Yoga gurus. Swami Vivekanand conducted lectures and discussions in the western world for the upliftment of yoga. Top Indian yoga gurus also include the names of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Baba Ramdev. They are the present day yoga gurus who have also gone international to promotethe idea of yoga in the lives of people. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar founded the Art of Living Foundation. Baba Ramdev, however, has made the biggest contribution in making yoga popular, through his TV shows. He is also making various medicines and products from Ayurveda for the benefit of people.
Yoga is not only about physical exercise, but is a way to integrate body, mind and spirit. Yoga means spiritual discipline. From yoga, emotion, intelligence and action can be balanced. The three major parts to Yoga are exercise, breathing and meditation. Yoga develops a harmony between man and nature.

The celebration of the World Yoga Day is encouraged by many global leaders. It will be celebrated by people of more than 170 countries.
